Today is the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
In today’s Gospel Jesus sends the twelve out to announce the Kingdom of Heaven and do mighty deeds in His name. Imagine being one of them and now you are being sent to cure the sick, raise the dead, and more. They must have been thinking, who, me? What if they attempted to perform some miraculous action and it didn’t work for them? I would think they were very nervous about all this, but they showed up and everything worked out. Oh we of little faith.
In today’s world we’re asked to show up for Jesus too. We may not be raising the dead and more, but we have our job to do. We are to bring people to Christ. When we live as disciples and make Christ present to others we’re showing up for Him. Not just believers but taking action based on that belief. That’s showing up.
How easy is it to say we believe but not take action as we should? How are we putting the love of God and neighbor into concrete action? You may remember the crazy looking guy with multi colored hair that used to hold up a John 3:16 sign at ball games. He was showing up for Jesus, though I think we’re called to more than that. We proclaim Him through the example of our lives, yes, but to the extent that we can, we need to do more. As Dcn. Tom Burns has reminded me it’s good to serve at bread line but we need to engage with the people we’re serving too.
To be sure there are lots of different ways to show up for Jesus. In our own homes and families, as well as with the wider world. However you can serve Him, do so. Show up for Jesus.
Connie and I have been following the tornadoes that came through Illinois last week. We pray that you are all well and any damage sustained was minimal. Be safe and be well.
That’s it for now. Thanks for reading.
I hope you have a great week.
Peace, Bob
