Today is All Saints Day
I guess All Saints Day has fallen on a Sunday during the years I’ve been writing this blog but I don’t remember it. That doesn’t surprise me though. My memory is certainly not as good as it once was.
The big computer in the sky says November 1st has most recently fallen on a Sunday in 2020 (Covid time) and 2015 since I’ve been writing This and That. I looked it up. Inquiring minds want to know after all. π
At Wednesday Mass with the school students we sang For All the Saints. The opening stanza goes: For all the saints, who from their labors rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed; Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia, Alleluia!
It makes me wonder how we’re all doing at blessing the name of Jesus. I hope we’re looking for opportunities to Bless His name in our words and actions so that others might know how we feel about Him, and maybe even come to know Him through us. You know, there’s always the danger that we don’t witness in a way that attracts others to Jesus, and can even push others away. To be a saint, or one on the way, is to act in His Holy Name and to bring others to Him.
One way that we take the name of the Lord in vain is to act and speak in ways that do not bring Glory to Him. It’s easy to get wrapped up in something, politics for example, and find ourselves focusing so much on the temporal that we neglect to make Him present for others in our words and our actions. I know many of us have strong feelings about many things, and that’s OK, Jesus did too, but let’s be careful to bless Him in our speech and actions.
So as we sing about the saints today may we be reminded of what it means to be a saint as well as a disciple, and act accordingly.
That’s it for now. Thanks for reading.
I hope you have a great week.
Peace, Bob
