Today is the twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time.
In today’s second reading St. Paul makes the point that we should focus on things that are honorable, just, pure, lovely, gracious, excellent, and worthy of praise. Imagine what he would have to say about some of our music, TV, online materials, etc.
As we try to advance in holiness it’s important for us to act intentionally with respect to what we take in. It’s all too easy to wander into the profane, and I don’t just mean bad language.
I talk with people all the time about acting intentionally with respect to our faith, and I believe that’s an important way to live, but it also applies to our engagement with the secular culture.
How many times is there material on the news, in a movie, in our earphones, and other places, that assault our senses and sensibilities? I find myself muting the sound and/or turning away my gaze, from the TV pretty much daily. You may do the same.
Christian morality is under assault in many different ways, some of which we invite into our own homes. While all of this can sound rather prudish I stand by St. Paul’s admonition as being an excellent prescription for at least some of what ails us spiritually.
So, think about what you’re taking in and maybe try a test. Act intentionally to turn away from things that are not honorable, just, pure, lovely, gracious, excellent, and worthy of praise and see how that feels. Maybe replace those things with more of our Lord.
That’s it for now. Thanks for reading.
I hope you have a great week.
Peace, Bob
