Today is the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us to be the salt of the earth. We know that salt preserves and it enhances taste. Salt melts into food but it has a great effect on it. That’s what we are to do as Christians in our society too. We shouldn’t call attention to ourselves but through our combined actions we should change and enhance the society we live in.
Jesus also calls us the light of the world. In this case we reflect Christ’s light for others. It can never be about us but always about Him and His light.
It is the role of us laypeople to be the salt and light Jesus is talking about and to transform our world.
One of the challenges we have is when we get distracted by the things of this world in a way that doesn’t reflect Christ but someone else or something else. We need to be careful that we’re not Trump Christians or Biden/Harris Christians, or whoever you may prefer in today’s political environment.
Of course we should be involved in politics but we should be careful that our light is always that of Christ. While we have to decide who to vote for in various elections it’s clear that neither major party is a perfect fit for Christians. We should support any politician when their values and policies align with those of Christ, regardless of party, and we should work against those values and policies that conflict with Christianity, regardless of party.
As salt and light we are called to go beyond labels and to Christify the world regardless of who our political leaders are or what they say and do. We have one king, and that is Jesus Christ.
That’s it for now. Thanks for reading.
I hope you have a great week.
Peace, Bob
