Giving Thanks for our King

Today is the feast of Christ the King of the Universe.

In today’s readings and prayers at Mass we celebrate our true king, Jesus Christ. Not like worldly kings or those who would be kings, our king has the ability to offer us reconciliation with the Father and, ultimately, salvation.

We’re about to enter Advent (next Sunday) and the holy day of Immaculate Conception, then Christmas and more. It’s a good time to get our heads straight about who we serve and whose we are. We should, of course, be active in our world but also, we need to not be of it. Our king is different and so we too need to be different.

When we think about being servants of our king do others know who we serve or have we become so worldly that we blend right in with the children of this world? As the old saying goes, if Christianity was illegal would there be enough evidence to convict us? We have a king and He’s told us clearly what he expects from us. On this day when we celebrate His kingship in a special way we would do well to remember those commandments.

Thursday is, of course, Thanksgiving in America. We have much to be thankful for, not the least of which is that we’ve been chosen to be disciples of Jesus Christ, unworthy as we are. Beyond that, as if that weren’t enough, we have many, many things to thank God for. For me I immediately think of Connie and the family I have because of her. I’m thankful for the Church family I’m a part of both here in Alabama, still in Springfield, and globally. For friends who have added to my life immeasurably. I’m thankful for the life I’ve been given and that I was chosen to live out that life in America, even with it’s warts. There are many more things but you get the picture. I’m sure you have your own list as well.

Whatever Thanksgiving looks like for you I hope it includes faith, family, and good food. A little football would be nice too.

That’s it for now. Thanks for reading.

I hope you have a great, and thanks filled, week.

Peace, Bob
