The Peace of the Lord

Today is the second Sunday of Advent.

When a bishop presides at Mass he says “peace be with you”, the same words as Jesus said. Today’s Advent candle represents peace.

The peace Jesus offers is a spiritual peace not like that of the world. While we wish for peace in the hotspots of the world as well as the streets of our own country the peace we are talking about today is that well being that only Jesus can offer.

When we wish Christ’s peace on others at Mass we are asking that spiritual well being be with those we greet. It is the ultimate peace we wish for ourselves and those we love as well.

Peace is also one of the fruits of living life in the spirit as St. Paul talked about in Galatians 5. When Connie and I were assisting with the diocesan Pre-Cana classes for couples who were to be married in the Church we talked about this fruit and encouraged the couples to live life in such a way that their home would be peaceful. Again, not just without conflict, though that’s a good thing too, but filled with that spiritual peace we’re thinking about as we light this week’s candle.

So, let’s consider if there’s anyone in our lives with whom we need to make peace as we’re preparing for the second coming of the Prince of Peace.

Last night Connie and I were in South Carolina for my family’s holiday get together. Because of Covid and some other barriers there were children there we had never met in person. It was a great time and so good to see everyone face to face again. I’m very grateful for that time we shared. I hope you and your loved ones get the chance to spend time together this holiday season.

That’s it for now. Thanks for reading.

I hope you have a great week.

Peace, Bob
